Okeh | Bill Frisell | Guitar in the Space Age (N) | Rumble, by Link Wray |
Bill Frisell: Guitar in the Space Age ($75 pledge) Bill Frisell is the most versatile guitarist in the Tangents universe. He helped redefine the jazz guitar as a textural instrument while a go-to player for ECM Records. He is at home playing classical, country, blues and rock. On his new album Guitar in the Space Age, Frisell re-explores the music that inspired his youth and has a blast doing it. He re-imagines the guitar music of the country, surf, swing, blues, and early rock & roll of the late 1950s through the mid-'60s. Some of the covers are faithful and on others such as the Kinks Tired of Waiting for You, Frisell and band stretch out and jam. My favorite is his ripping, reverb heavy version of Rumble. His longtime band is on full display: Greg Leisz on guitar and pedal steel, drummer /vibraphonist Kenny Wollesen, and bassist Tony Scherr. For folks not familiar with Bill, this album is a perfect intro and if you grew up listening to music of the 50's and 60's, you won't be disappointed. Some of the other song titles include: Rebel Rouser (Duane Eddy), Turn Turn Turn (Seeger/Byrds) and surf hits Telstar and Pipeline. Spring Membership Drive

Motema | Awa Sangho | Ala Ta (N) | Somofola |
Awa Sangho: Ala Ta ($75 pledge) Mali is a breeding ground for extraordinary singers including Oumou Sangare, Salif Keita, Rokia Traoré and Fatoumata Diawara. A rising star who may be new to you is Awa Sangho who was born near Timbuktu and since 2011 lives in New York City. (lucky them) This is Awa's debut solo cd but she is no overnight sensation. Awa established herself in Abidjan, the capital of music production in the region in the 1980s. There, she sang, danced, acted, and began to travel the world with Ensemble Koteba and the women-led band she co-founded in 1993, Les Go de Koteba. The musicianship on her debut cd "Ala Ta" is outstanding but it's Awa's voice that is most striking. Like many African singers her songs come from a deep place. Awa often sings about motherhood and the problems facing children. She boldly tackles provocative issues such as on the song "Naigaikorosigui", which is a term for female genital cutting. Awa dedicates the album "to the mothers of the world and to feminity in all is aspects". Spring Membership Drive
