Rap Music has come a long way since its inception within hip hop culture in New York City and has gained cultural and political significance as it has spread thorughout the world. Tangents takes us on a glopal rap excursion featuring African rappers such as Daara J from Senegal, former child-soldier Emanuel Jal from Sudan and Algerian Rai singer Cheb Mami. Rap music pioneers Melle Mel and Grand Master Flash along with the "Godfather of Rap" Gil Scot-Heron are also included.

Cross-Cultural Kora
Tangents spotlights the kora, the 21 stringed harp/lute indigenous to West Africa. Best known as a solo instrument, the kora has emerged as a vehicle for cross-cultural explorations. Host Dore Stein shows that the kora is at home anywhere, with songs steeped in flamenco, Afro-Cuban, North Indian classical, Swedish polska, jazz and qawwali (featuring Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Kauwding Cissokho).

  • Abdou M'Boup—Abdou M'Boup is from Senegal and is a griot. He has trained in the memorization of the complex rhythms and oral history of his people since he was a child. He recorded with the Tom Tom Club and is heard on the Talking Heads' "Naked" CD. He has also recorded with violinist Jean-Luc Ponty, recorded and toured with pianist Jean-Michel Pilc and performed with Randy Weston.
  • Ballake Cissokho (or Sissoko)—He was first brought to world-wide attention on the 1999 collaboration with distant cousin Toumani Diabate on "New Ancient Strings".. They have lived next door to each other since birth. The son of the late Djelimadi Sissoko, one of Mali's greatest musicians, Ballak represents the new sound of the younger generation. His solo recording are on the Indigo label out of France. His solo CDs @ Label Bleu
