Lucinda Williams The Ghosts of Highway 20 (Double CD) ($120 pledge) Recently launching her own label has freed Lucinda Williams to express her music with no corporate restraints. With the freedom to do what she wants she has released her 2nd double cd set in less than 2 years. At 63, Lucinda is more versatile than she's ever been. This recording was inspired by Highway 20 (now Interstate 20) that was her first road crush. It runs for 1500 miles from South Carolina to Texas. For this musical journey she recruited the Tangential hall-of-fame guitar team of Bill Frisell & Greg Leisz (the latter also co-produced the album with Williams and manager/husband Tom Overby). Lucinda's emotionally direct approach is on full display but she also knows when to step aside to let the guitar sonics of Frisell and Leisz take over. This album contains a song that is in contention for the top Tangents tune of the year - the epic "Faith & Grace". It clocks in at 12:43 but it feels like 2 minutes. St Germain (Afro Groove) ($75 pledge) Ludovic Navarre, the French DJ and producer better known as St Germain has released one of the top played Tangents albums so far this year. It's the first album in 15 years from St Germain as he embarked on an extended period of research and reflection, delving into the music of West Africa. He recorded with Malian musicians who live in Paris. St Germain is a master at mixing machine and human elements and here he combines electronic loops and traditional Malian instruments like the kora, the balafon, and the n'goni with pianos, saxophones, and electric guitars. Featured prominently is Guimba Kouyate, once praised by Brian Eno as one of the best guitarists in the world, his graceful playing serves as the album's unifying force. This is a Tangential groove album that is driven by textural flow and is hypnotically beautiful. KALW Spring Membership Drive | |||
