Islamic/Arabic Jazz
At a time of deepening divisions between the West and Islamic culture, it's a good time to be reminded of the power of music to bridge cultures and heal differences. The marriage of jazz which is part of America's soul, and Islamic music is a beautiful fit. The proof lies in the music as the program includes ambassadors of Islamic and Arabic music such as Lebanese oudist Marcel Khalife and Hamza El Din's only recorded foray into jazz. Also featured is one of the earliest examples of Arabic jazz: 1958's "Jazz Sahara" from Ahmed Abdul-Malik, and sacred grooves from South Africa's Abdullah Ibrahim.
