Soul Food
($75 pledge)
The Word is one of my favorite gospel blues bands (along with the Campbell Bros.) Soul Food will likely be one of my top 10 albums of the year.
It features the Michael Jordan of *sacred steel guitar, Robert Randolph, who has played with Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, and Buddy Guy.
The Word also features the versatile groove master John Medeski on organ and all 3 North Mississippi Allstars filling out guitar, drums and bass.
* Sacred steel is ecstatic pedal steel guitar used in sanctified churches; it's the same instrument familiar to country & western music,
but played with the authority and scale of a church organ.
The members all play in their own bands so this is only The Word's 2nd cd - first in 14 years.
As Medeski says: "This band has a special chemistry, which is why we're coming back to it after fourteen years."
"At church," says Robert Randolph, "the music follows the spirit. I have to be ready at any moment to go in any direction to do whatever anyone wants to do.
This band does that - that's what THE WORD does."
"What THE WORD does best is ensemble improvisation," says Luther Dickinson. "It's not jazz style improvisation, it's gospel influenced."
