MAY 10 MOTHER'S DAY TANGENTS PARTY
featuring the TANGENTIAL ALL-STARS:
Yair Dalal: Israeli oudist, violinist and vocalist
Jim Santi Owen: tabla and percussion
Stephen Kent: didjeridu
George Brooks: saxophone
Rachael Bouch-D: cajon
The
first 2009 Tangents party was one for the ages. 150+ folks attended the
first public event at the newly opened "Twin Space" venue in the heart
of the Mission district. After about 2 hours of socializing and a
bountiful potluck, The Tangential All-Stars mesmerized the audience for
2 1/2+ hours over two sets. Yair and Jim opened with two pieces: one
was violin and tabla and the second, oud and tabla. The first set ended
with a gorgeous version of Yair's "Al Ol" with the full ensemble. The
night progressed with various combinations including a scintillating
percussive duet between Jim and Rachael to open the second set. Yair's
"Perfume Road" and George's "The Outer Sea" were particular favorites.
Before the music sets, the audience was showered with free cd's. Those
who came with a receipt from a local non-chain bookstore were given
cd's. Each person talked about their neighborhood bookstore with an
attendee even representing Powell's in Portland. Then the mothers took
over. We gave away tangential cd's to moms with many kids, single moms,
step moms, grandmothers and even moms with 5 or more cats.
Tangents events are grassroots productions with many hands chipping in.
Big thanks to:

Hester Lox who did yeoman door duty and potluck organizing.
Tom Lawless
who was the ultimate selfless party hero as he visited Dore's home to
transport the stage riser to the venue, did some door work and stayed
until 12:30a to shlep the riser back to Dore's garage.
Carol Urzi, always with a smile, who did emergency runs for ice and big utensils.
The ice chest brigade: Don Coolidge, Fred and Cheryl Merrick, Meridithe Mendelsohn and Sharon Schanzer (we'll miss you Sharon!)
Terence Groeper, Clara Hsu and Martin MacClain for doing whatever's needed.
The many folks who helped throughout and those who stayed to clean up -
I don't know who you all were but thanks from the bottom of my heart. I
do recall Don Coolidge, Emily Bromley, Glen and Stacy Martin and the anonymous all-star party clean up crew.
TANGENTIAL PARTY FEEDBACK:
Wow.
Wow.
That was an exceptional concert last night. Ranks up there with
the best. Great location, great sound (Stephen could have been a
tiny bit louder, but maybe they corrected that at the break), great
line up, and overall good feeling. That is music at it's
best. An early morning for Andrea and me was the only reason we
left.
I wonder if you have ever considered recording such an event and making
it available to tangent's listeners, maybe others, and seeing that all
proceeds go to the musicians. I realize that there is something
special about the ephemeral nature of an unrecorded event, but this was
so, so beautiful. I want to live it and hear it again and again.
Once again, thank you for your efforts, support, devotion, and, most of all. your vision.
with gratitude,
charles
