ACCOMMODATIONS
We opt for charming and culturally authentic instead of Western styled deluxe hotels.
The
majority of places we stay reflect the culture and flavor of Turkey. In
Istanbul for example we have stayed in a Special Class Hotel, the Spina
Hotel (hotelspina.com), in the lovely Sutanahmet district. Sultanahmet
stands right on top of the ancient Byzantine settlement. This is "Old
Istanbul", a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site which will be our
home base while in Istanbul. Spina Hotel is a converted historical
wooden hotel that was formed by the restoration of a Turkish house
dating to the 19th century. This hotel is situated between two of the
most famous landmarks in Turkey: the Blue Mosque and Aya Sofya. Special
Class hotels tend to have fewer rooms and are more personal. Clara and
I started staying at Spina eight years ago and having an already
established relationship pays dividends.
The
other key Turkey hubs are Goreme (Cappadocia region) and Sirince (near
Izmir). We will stay in a cave hotel in Goreme with gorgeous views. In
Sirince we'll stay at a charming pension in an idyllic setting.
For the first time the 2012 group travels east and visits the
stunning
ancient town of Mardin which is perched on a mountain side. Our hotel
is whitewashed stone in character with the traditional stone houses of
Mardin.
